Coppell Independent School District was created by a vote of the local citizenry just 50 years ago, and they have proactively supported the district ever since. In a move other
area districts could only envy, the citizens of Coppell united with the City and passed a 1/2 cent sales tax increase dedicated to education. Still, CISD ranks in the top 10% for high academic performance with low spending. So it appears Coppell citizens get to have their cake (a great school system) and eat it too (school board fiscal responsibility)….
A model district featuring model schools
Coppell remained a one high school town until 2008, when New Tech High @ Coppell, a “project-based” learning environment was opened. Students here create projects as a way to learn the course material rather than create a project at the end of a unit to test understanding. At New Tech, students’ school days are made up of 22 twenty minute “modules” divided into either three or four module long classes.
Students work with school provided laptops on a 1:1 ratio. As part of the New Tech Network and just one of 60 or so “New Tech” schools in the country, it is often used as a model by other districts interested in the program.
Hands on experience
The Business Education Partnerships, a collaboration between the district and local business allows students to work with local business owners. The goal is to teach students that education doesn’t stop at graduation if they’re going to be productive and successful. Local businesses are critical to the success of the ”Academies” the district began in 2010. The Public Services Academy (EDMED) for students wishing to pursue careers in eduction or medicine provides opportunities that will enhance students’ college acceptance. The Emerging Media and Communications Academy (EMAC) focuses on careers in radio, tv and film, plus web design, journalism and graphic design. STEM, the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math 
Academy allows students the opportunity to have hands-on experience with some of the same technology used by NASA and Lockheed Martin.
A jump start on college
Starting after their sophomore year, students may be eligible for dual enrollment in high school and college in the CISD Jump Start on College Plan. Over 60 courses are available and students can choose to take as little as one half credit course or complete the 48 hour college equivalent of sophomore.
Coppell High School was authorized as an International Baccalaureate World School in 2008. The first IB classes began in 2009, and the second class – 2010 – enrolled over 100 students. The large number of IB Diploma candidates puts CHS in the top echelon of Texas IB schools.
