What used to be a rural area until the 1970′s completion of the D/FW International Airport
has grown into the almost built out city of Southlake. Southlakes City Council had the foresight to create a city plan that set the tone of future development just in time for the mid 1990′s building boom. They rezoned all of the land in town, locking in the high standards and quality of life Southlake residents now expect.
Southlake named among most affluent
Developers were eager to take part in the building frenzy, and added amenities the city encouraged and buyers craved like community swimming pools, tennis courts, greenbelts and ponds. Rising land costs
during the boom meant more expensive homes being built. City services grew with the population and now Southlake offers residents more than 900 acres of parks, 45 practice and game fields, 15 lighted tennis courts, plus ponds, pavilions, trails, and even an inline hockey park. The median price of Southlake homes now hovers around $600,000, and Forbes proclaimed Southlake the most affluent city in the nation for a town of its size in 2008.
Southlakes planned growth
Unlike Southlake’s neighbor cities of Keller and Grapevine, there was no original, charming “old time” downtown area. But in 1996, the firm of Cooper and Stebbins came to the city with the concept for Town Square, the unique live, work, shop city center
now known throughout the area for its upscale shops and fine dining. Located between Southlake Blvd. and the extended Highway 114, Phase One of Town Square was completed in 1999 and almost immediately studied by other cities and developers as a model of smart design. Two additional phases of Town Square were opened in 2006.
Town Square has indeed become the focal point hub of the city, hosting some of Southlake’s most popular events including Home for the Holidays, Oktoberfest, (be sure and see the wiener dog races!) and Art in the Square.
Top quality schools in Southlake
While a tiny portion of Southlake sits in Denton county, the majority is in Tarrant County. The Denton County portions of the city are in the Northwest Independent School District. Far west Southlake does have homes in the Keller Independent School District, while a tiny corner of east Southlake is served by the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District. The majority of Southlake is located in the Carroll School District, the largest Exemplary rated district in the state.
